First Mentor Visit

This past week I learned about the Application layer in the TCP and OSI model and had my first mentor visit. The Application layer consists of protocols that focus on proving process-to-process communication across a network and provides a communication interface for end-device users. Some types of protocols I learned about were: remote login protocols (Telnet), file transfer protocols (FTP, TFTP), electronic mail protocols (SMTP, POP3, IMAP), and networking support protocols (DNS). Later this week I had my first mentor visit with Mr. Hart, where Mr. Hart and I discussed my plans for the year. We talked about the upcoming events including Research Showcase, and Final Presentation Night. We also talked about potential ideas for my Original Work and Final Product and how I could incorporate different types of Augmented Reality. We discussed the pros and cons of using location based augmented items vs. using spatial mapping to spatially map item to certain points in a room. Another thing that was discussed were different types of tech like the Microsoft HoloLens and Google’s project tango and what each device could be used for. One thing that was brought to my attention was the downside of using a HoloLens was that every time someone different used it, it had to be recalibrated vs. the project tango which can be used by anyone, but, doesn’t provide as much of an immersive experience. Overall the meeting was extremely informative and I look forward to learning more from Mr. Hart.
